Why You Need A Birth Plan

Updated: Apr 28, 2022

A birth plan is SO worth having. Hear me out!

Creating a birth plan empowers you to become informed of ALL your options during labor. At the same time, it's a tool to communicate your wishes to those caring for you during your labor and after the birth of your baby so that they can respect and know your preferences, so you don't feel the need to advocate for yourself during the actual birth.

It also changes the way you feel facing birth: having done your research and choosing every preference makes you feel prepared, empowered, confident. It's like showing up to an exam when you have studied, your nervousness and fear immediately lowers or goes away, you feel calm and at peace knowing that you are ready! And let's remember, fear and tension are the last thing we need at birth.

Having a birth plan also helps you envision the birth you want, and and bring it to life.

And yes, when you prepare a birth plan, you are aware that there's no guarantee. You can't know how everything will unfold, HOWEVER unlike what many people think, a birth plan is not all about epidural or not and choices that may easily change last minute. It's actually about understanding all of the options you have when it comes to creating the right ambiance & relaxation techniques that will HELP you accomplish the birth YOU want, and even immediate postpartum options like the golden hour, delayed cord clamping, refusing any shots and such, things you can most definitely control and that no one should choose for you.
